Abalone hunting requires the use a heavy-duty metal pry bar to remove the abalone from the rocks they attach themselves by suctioning themselves to the surface. Most locations require ab irons to meet certain size and thickness requirements. The irons must also be marked with the size limits of the different types of abalone, allowing divers to gauge the size of the abalone without disturbing it.
