The team, or any player of the team, in the field.

1. Any move or plan that is intended to meet or stop an enemy's threats or attack.
2. Name used for openings initiated by black, such as Petroff Defense, French Defense. etc. These systems are called defenses due to black having the second move, and being forced to respond to white's first move.

A team's function of preventing the opposition from scoring

The space between the goalkeeper and the defender nearest to him.

Once the Defender is in position goal side of the ball , the Defender must think about his/her line of recovery , marking and challenging an opponent. The Defender has 5 options.
1. Track an Attacker who is making a run to the back of the defense .
2. Occupy important space goal side of the ball .
3. Mark an Attacker in the area of the ball.
4. Cover a teammate who is challenging the Attacker with the ball.
5. Challenge the Attacker with the ball.

Tennis Glossary

The best players know how to play defense. It may not be pretty, it could be downright scrappy, but hang in there on every point. Move for everything, try to anticipate but don't guess, throw up a lob, stay up in the court, do whatever it takes and try to get one more ball back in the court. You never know what you can return unless you push yourself. Never, ever give up!
