From his usual position behind the two front-runners, the key to Etcheverry's influence on the match is where he has to go to receive and give passes. Along with Carlos Valderrama, the only players to have been named to the MLS Best 11 in both seasons. A key to Bolivia's run to the Copa America final, Etcheverry scored three goals in five matches during the competition, and added two others in World Cup qualifiers during 1997. He started in nine of Bolivia's 10 World Cup qualifiers over the calendar year, but the country finished unable to return to the World Cup. Graduate of the world-famous Tahuichi Academy in Santa Cruz. Known as "El Diablo." Won both the Dallas Cup and Gothia Cup (in Sweden) in 1987 with Tahuichi.
