Half volley
1. Striking a dropping ball at the moment it hits ground. 2. To kick the ball the instant after it touches the ground. 3. Kicking the ball on the short hop.
A shot you don't want to have to hit too often. A quick pick-up or scoop off the forehand or backhand side off a ball that you couldn't quite hit in the air but didn't let bounce for any length of time. Seen a lot with aggressive play and in doubles.
The racquet is lowered towards the ground and the ball played back immediately after it has bounced.
