Sport DictionaryWorld Cup 2006 Teams and Players

On 25 May 2006, Australia played their first home game since qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, a 1-0 win against Greece in Melbourne.

A strike from Josip Skoko on the 15th minute was enough for Australia in front of a huge MCG crowd. A deep corner from the left by Marco Bresciano was headed back in by Lucas Neill, with Mile Sterjovski reacting quickly to head the ball to the edge of the area towards Skoko. There looked little danger with the ball bouncing up and the Greek defence rushing out, but Skoko's left-foot effort flew into the top corner of the net, giving goalkeeper Antonios Nikopolidis no chance.

Neither team could find the net in the second half in front of the crowd of 95,103, with both sides making a number of changes - Greece made six substitutions and Australia four.
