He made his national-team debut in 1990, featured in the Czech squad for the 1990 World Cup and started every game in Euro 96. He operates in a more defensive role, almost as a wing-back. He is the link man in the side, and his leadership qualities were in evidence when he helped FC Schalke 04 to UEFA Cup success in 1996/97. Voted Czech Player of the Year in 1997.
