He has had a glittering club career since a low-key start with Winterslag. He smashed over 100 goals in six seasons with RSC Anderlecht before moving onto PSV Eindhoven where he has starred in numerous Dutch league triumphs. His international career began over twelve years ago when he made his debut in a 3-0 victory against Hungary, however it took four years for him to register his first international goal. Ever since his performances at the highest level have been mercurial and his goals tally disappointing for a player of such technical ability, flair and finishing power. After the World Cup, Nilis retired from international football, citing various reasons for his departure. He announced his willingness to return to international duty in November 1999 after the departure of manager George Leekens and was recalled to the squad by Robert Waseige in April 2000.
